I'm long overdue on sharing some thoughts on a book published about six months ago: Black and White - From Snapshots to Great Shots that was written by someone I consider a mentor in the world of photography - John Batdorff.

I was fortunate to take two workshops with John - the first in Chicago and the second in the beautiful west. What I have loved about John's workshops is the intimate setting - both workshops were comprised of less than 6 people - and his thorough yet concise teaching style (tailored to the needs of each individual).

Black and White - From Snapshots to Great Shots, brings me back to that feeling of being taught in person. Whether you are a beginner or intermediate photographer you will walk away with great knowledge not only on black and white photography, but some tips on capturing and processing images in general. I highly suggest it!

Reflections Challenge: Mirror February

So much I love about this MIRROR reflection!

First, I love that it was taken at Mon Ami Gabi, one of my favorite restaurants in Chicago...

Second, the reflection consists of many bottles of wine (a Coniglio favorite)....

Third, the translation of the french words = Tasting Anytime - Oysters/Mussels (for anyone that knows me personally, I am a big fan of both)....

AND last (but not least) a favorite frequented location with my good friends Lynn and Ivan!

Reflections Challenge: BUILDING January

Just a few days late, here is the first of twelve photos for the 2012 REFLECTIONS CHALLENGE.

I thought for sure I would capture this one a few weeks ago in NYC, but I just didn't find a shot to fit the bill. So yesterday, I deliberately grabbed my camera on my way to work in pursuit of capturing something in my home city - Chicago. I had a feeling I would end up with the iconic Wrigley Building. I've taken many photos of this beautiful building before, but now it serves a specific purpose: January - Building Reflection.

Peace of Snow

There is always some magic in a snowstorm.

Everything stops - people avoid getting in their cars, schools close and grocery stores are stripped of most commodities the night before, so that people can stay in and marvel at the snow from their window. Silence.

For me, I like to think of it as a sign to slow down... An excuse to enjoy the people that you are sheltered with or a chance to relish in some alone time.

And then the peace of snow breaks. The sound of snow plows immerse and the shovels come out.

So next time it snows where you are - think of it as an excuse to check out and just enjoy the moment OR play in the snow (before the peace of snow breaks)!

My niece is a beautiful dancer and what I love is that she brings that to her every day life... which is demonstrated in this picture.

Bella thought that I was taking a picture of her smiling into the camera, but as you can see, I was focused on her pose instead.

I was fortunate enough to have my sister-in-law, Liz and niece, Bella visit last weekend. We enjoyed so many things and I treasure that time together.

Looking back, several times throughout the weekend, I couldn't help notice Bella moving gracefully.... even if just down a city sidewalk or within my condo - like a true dancer. I appreciate that gracefulness and hope that she'll take that with her as she grows into an adult.

Bella, you are a beautiful person and dancer and I love you just the way you are!

If you are a regular here, you've already seen this picture (about a month ago)... but you may notice a few tweaks to make it canvas ready for my good friends, Lynn and Ivan who are the recipient of my latest "I Owe You" gift. They've waited patiently, and I am happy to say that the time has come!

This picture was taken on a beautiful August evening from "Still Crazy" on Lake Michigan.

The perspective of the picture makes you feel like you are actually in the boat, which is always (at least for me, and I know Lynn and Ivan) a great feeling of freedom and peace - especially with the beautiful colors of sunset!

Special Wedding Moments Recovered.

A year ago today, my youngest brother got married to the love of his life....

I was fortunate to be the photographer for this special occasion. I snapped away in hopes of capturing all of the beautiful moments of the weekend.

I promptly downloaded my photos the morning after the wedding and to my dismay, one of my cards had a corrupt file on it causing the whole card to be unreadable.... Photographer's worst nightmare! All of the files from the rehearsal dinner and reception... gone!

The weeks after, I went to several photography shops and electronic stores in hopes that they could recover the files. No luck. I came close to giving up, but the card sat on my desk with a little glimmer of hope that I'd figure out a way.

Well, almost a year later, after a phone call to the card manufacturer and a conversation with a tech company, I was on my way to recovering 422 files from my brother and sister-in-law's special day.

Today on their anniversary, I flipped through the photos... smiling.

Here are just a few that will hopefully make you smile too.

Today was a beautiful day in Chicago and I was so very fortunate to spend it on the Lake with my good friends Lynn and Ivan.

Sailing is so healing... and with the vibrant sun, even more healing! I had such a great day today... and as always, had my camera in tow.

Life is So Very Very Precious.

I've seen a lot of sentiments regarding the anniversary of this fateful day. Everyone has a story and can recall all the moments that went along with the events of 9/11.

I can remember it like it was yesterday... those initial moments sitting in my office on 23rd Street - denying that it was happening (I couldn't look out the window and look at the crumbling), fearing what was going to happen next, anxious to get in contact with friends and family and them, trying to get in touch with me and feeling just devastated.

And then there was the aftermath.... walking through the streets of what felt like a ghost town - white soot everywhere, trapped in Manhattan, understanding what had happened and just feeling sad.

But as always with something so horrible, there are life lessons. For me there were many, but there is one that changed how I approach life starting 10 years ago and that is this:

~ Life is so very very precious. Enjoy it to the fullest every day - whatever that means to you - with family and friends, traveling the world, doing fulfilling work and/or giving to someone in need.~

I will never forget that day and the days after it. The many people who lost friends and family and the brave souls that would give so much to those in need that they lost their lives. They all have my utmost respect and have reminded me that life is so very very precious.

This picture was taken in Jersey City months or maybe years after 9/11/01. I don't quite remember when I took it and because it is film (not digital) I can't track it. What I do remember is the feeling I had in looking at this skyline and the memorial in the front (which happens to be a remnant from WTC) and that was that life was different after that fateful day.

Life is full of challenges and we all have had moments where we've had to stir up courage to deal with them.
I continue to be amazed by the courage that many have embodied when faced with the diagnosis of cancer. I can't imagine how that feels.
In particular, I am amazed by my sister-in-law, Tricia, who heard those dreaded words over seven years ago. Her courage through the battle has been like nothing I have ever seen... having so much faith - she is an example of who I think we should all be in life in general. She lives healthily now and we are all so thankful for that!

I know I've said it before, but I feel so fortunate to have friends who are willing to share their boat trips with me. I appreciate not only the beautiful views but the wonderful company every time I climb aboard. A few nights ago was not an exception. The weather was just beautiful and I savored each moment of being on the Lake at sunset. Here are a couple of pictures from the evening.

Looking forward to my next trip aboard "Still Crazy" in just a few days! I am certain there will be more photos to come... perhaps my "Olive Green" for my Crayola Photo Challenge. :-)

Stormy Chicago 3-Day Views

It was fun to have the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure in my back yard (almost literally) this past weekend. On Sunday, we faced Mother Nature with some stormy weather.... Luckily, it was not too dangerous.... so our participants were safe. For someone who enjoys taking photos though, it was a beautiful with the brilliant blues and greens. I love that I did this photo shoot without any hopes of getting a crayola color out of it... instead just wanted to take a picture of two beautiful women.

With all of my upcoming (and past travel), I decided to stay put here in Chicago for the holiday weekend and have a staycation. I've enjoyed my very closest surroundings including Foster Beach as the weather has been absolutely beautiful (finally!).

Originally, I was planning on using a flag in honor of Independence Day, for my midnight blue but the color just didn't match.

Instead, I went to my Chicago archives. It's always fun to look back at photos from a while back and this picture particularly caught my eye for three reasons:

1. It iconic Chicago.
2. It was a MIDNIGHT BLUE match.
3. This picture was taken in January, so the weather represented here is completely opposite of the weather we are experiencing right now.... It really made me appreciate even more the beautiful long days we get in the Chicago summers!

Here's to not taking these beautiful days for granted and remembering them in the bitter cold days of winter!

Crayola Challenge: MELON.

I scoured Vegas for melon a couple of weeks ago and while this object would typically not be something I would take a picture of, it was really the only one that fit the melon bill.

What's cool is this bird is made from a variety of dried seeds and plants lettuce, onion, poppy, lentil, flax, magnolia, seaweed, strawflower and dried coconut.

If you ever find yourself in Vegas, be sure to stop by the Bellagio Gardens. Pretty.

Wild Weather!

There is wild weather all over the country this year! Mother nature is wreaking havoc in many different ways. I've been a midst this crazy weather, but fortunately have been able to escape any damages. A couple of weeks ago, I was amongst the very many at O'Hare that had to seek shelter since there were tornado warnings in the area... and more recently, last night, I witness much lightening followed by a hail storm right outside of my home. Wild.

It was of the later that I got this first picture. I stood in my window for several minutes (without tripod - I should have just got it out!) in order to get at least one strike. This was it!

The second is of the clouds this morning. It almost looks like a painting....

Anticipation: Emeril's Table.

I love the vibe at a good farmer's market. It's usually a happy place - music playing, amazing smells in the air and beautiful food. I mean, who doesn't get at least a little excited about fresh (sometimes organic) abundant food to choose from?!

This time, I not only enjoyed the typical things listed above, but I walked around in great anticipation of being a guest at Emeril's Table next week. That's right, I (and four of my siblings) are making our television debut in the fall and are taping the show on Tuesday in NYC. So at the very least, I am getting really excited about a feast!

I captured the following pictures at the Green City Market in Chicago yesterday in anticipation of being at Emeril's Table. I will be sure to share the details of the show as it comes closer, but you know it's gotta be good if my sister-in-law (Fran Brescia-Coniglio) is an executive producer for it! :-)

Crayola Challenge: MAHOGANY.

I went literal on this one. I wasn't sure when I took the picture, but most grand pianos are made from mahogany wood which explains this perfect match.

I've always admired people who can play the piano. It is my favorite instrument... I only wish I kept at my lessons as a child. Maybe I should take it up again... never too late!

Crayola Challenge: MAGENTA.

It's cold (and rainy) again. These extremes are crazy. The need for rain jackets though, made for a great match for magenta!

These two sisters (whom I don't know) looked absolutely adorable in their matching "magenta" jackets. They were decked out... enough to jump in some puddles a little later on (of which I wasn't able to capture!).

I knew the second I saw them that they'd be my magenta! So as they walked past, I snapped away.

One may argue that the exact match is not really in the greater part of the jacket(s), but rather the dark shadows in the creases and the polka dot boots the little girl to the left is wearing.

Crayola Challenge: LAVENDER.

I've been walking/running on the lakefront these last couple of weeks (with the nice weather finally upon us). The flowers are just amazing right now. These flowers fit the lavender bill.

I feel so fortunate to have such beautiful things in my back yard... this is just one of many.

OK... one more from the archive... I couldn't resist. My friend Staci Prince (upon finding out about this Crayola Challenge), said - "I bet the Grand Prismatic Geyser could cover one of them pretty well!" Well, she was right and here it is... my jungle green in the prismatic spring in Yellowstone National Park.

I still am in awe on how amazing the colors are... If you've never been, I absolutely recommend checking Yellowstone out!

Crayola Challenge: GOLD.

This is an oldie but goodie... I took this 2 1/2 years ago when I traveled to Europe with my niece, Suzy. It is just a tiny portion of one of the massive ceilings within the Alhambra in Granada, Spain. I have always loved how intricate the architecture is and how it looks like a star. I loved it so much, I made it into a magnet in 2009 for my Holiday cards/greetings. (So for some, this may look familiar!)

I searched high and low for my gold. In fact, I had a picture from my travels in PA this past week, that I thought for sure would fit the bill and upon matching it up realized, it just didn't cut it. For a moment I thought I would be back on the search, when I walked by my refrigerator and saw this magnet. It was then that I decided that I would go to the archives for this one (since it is such a perfect match).

So here's my gold.... And here's to rediscovering the beautiful things you've seen in your travels in life!

I have to admit, I somehow went a little out of order and skipped onto gray and green before I even got to fuchsia and gold. In any case, I am back on track and getting caught up with my fellow Crayola Challenge comrades (Cyrena and Molly).

I am so happy the sun is finally shining (albeit a little hot now... one extreme or the other)! It feels like summer and I am appreciating every nook of it! Hope you are enjoying it where you are!

Crayola Challenge: GREEN grass.

Nothing represents green more than grass (at least to me). I can remember as a child there were two things I used the green crayon for: grass and flower stems. So, on this beautiful morning (yes, it's true!), I decided to go out and find some grass to match the green crayon.

Not only was it beautiful, but the grass was in the midst of being mowed. I don't know about you, but I LOVE the smell of freshly cut grass... I wish there was a way to transport that smell through my computer to give you the full effect.

When I got back home and downloaded the photo, I actually thought it wasn't going to fit the bill, but then as I looked closer, I noticed that some of the darker grass in the shadows matched.

So here you go... Here's to a fresh start to the week!

Crayola Challenge: GRAY Skies.

There have been a lot of gray skies here in Chicago...

This picture has a lot of grays in it, but I think the sky most closely matches the crayon color.

I took this from my friends' boat a few weeks ago and while it was a gray evening (and quite chilly), I still appreciate the opportunity to capture pictures like this one (and of course, enjoy great company!).

I took this over a month ago and have been meaning to post, but the days have gotten away from me. Tonight, I was in the mood to post something and I quickly remembered this trip to the Phoenix Desert Botanical Garden in which I took several photos. This was the last photo I took, upon exiting, and there is just something I love about it.... Maybe it's just that flowers are always beautiful and I appreciate having the opportunity to see many different types in all of my travels.

I loved this area of Philadelphia - it felt very European and the weather was perfect, so people were dining outdoors and the mood was fantastic. I particularly loved this restaurant, which fit right in with the day and noticed the various shades of green (including FOREST GREEN) surrounding the windows.

Fortunately, I was able to be a part of the spontaneous launch of "Still Crazy" (Lynn and Ivan's boat) yesterday... Despite the chilly temps, I was still able to enjoy the beauty of the surrounding views. I have many photos from the day, but this one (which was taken once we made it to our destination and were almost docked) was one of my favorites... This was one of a very few boats at the dock, but within a few weeks (probably only a few days) this place will be packed! I appreciated the solace, even for a split moment... and the anticipation of the summer ahead, even more.

I took this picture yesterday in hopes to accomplish "forest green" in my Crayola Challenge. Much to my chagrin, it did not match! But, I do love this building and had to share it anyway, especially on a day when more people think about and initiate being green.

JUST BECAUSE: I Needed Some More Spring Today

It snowed this morning in Chicago.... April 18th! So, it's simple - I thought I'd share some Spring flowers today.

As mentioned in a recent post, I had the fortunate experience of visiting Skagit Valley (just north of Seattle) with a friend of mine last week. Even despite the rainy/cold weather, the views were breathtaking. If you ever find yourself up that way around this time of the year, I encourage you to take the trip to the flower farms. Just beautiful!

Crayola Challenge: CORNFLOWER MEETS DANDELION.

Yep, I am checking off two colors in one picture. I couldn't resist, since the colors were a perfect match on both counts.

I had the great opportunity to check out these beautiful fields of daffodils this past week in Skagit Valley - just north of Seattle. (Thanks to Jess for your assistance on this adventure!) Even on a gray/rainy day, it took my breath away. I will be posting some more soon from the day - including some pictures of tulip fields. Stay tuned.

Crayola Challenge: OPPORTUNITY COPPER.

The obvious representation of this picture is the copper color (on the underside of the bead), so I can now check that one off of my list... :-) But what I wanted to share today, is a deeper representation of this picture for me.

Many months ago, I was given these beautiful beads by my good friend Ruth-Anne. She got them in Africa where they are in abundance as making (from paper!) and selling beads (necklaces, earrings etc.) is the main source of income for many. They hang in my living room and every time the sun sets, they begin to glow. They give off a certain energy: one of hope and opportunity - an energy that I feel so fortunate to have so much of!

I was reminded of this as I attended a brunch to benefit Opportunity International (a wonderful organization that "provides financial products and strategies to over two million people working their way out of poverty in the developing world.") It has left me motivated and ready to do more with this energy that I have!

Think about what you can do today that would help those in need.... whether in poverty, battling a terrible disease or with a goal to just make the world a better place - sometimes (just like making a beautiful bead from just a simple piece of paper) it only takes a little to make a big difference.

This swatch was taken from my friend Molly's blog, as my crayon box did not have this color! Thanks, Molly, for letting me use this (without getting permission! :-)).

Just Because: I Appreciate My Sunset Skyline.

I got home from work (downtown office) yesterday and was delighted to find my front west-facing room flooded with sunlight (at 6:30!). I spent a few minutes just sitting on my couch in silence relishing the warmth and appreciating the sunlight on my face. Just a few minutes later, I opened my eyes to see this fantastic sunset. Not only was the sky beautiful, but I really began to appreciate the church steeple that peeps up right in the middle of my "skyline".

I enlisted my friend Kari in finding my next color: cerulean, today. While brunching at Acre in Andersonville, we looked around the room and she noticed these pretty berries on the chalk board above us... I pulled out my swatch and exclaimed "perfect match"!
Even better, I loved the message on the board: "Spring Has Sprung. Break Out The White!" I am longing for Spring to come out in full force... in some ways this gives me that hope (plus the sun is actually shining today). I hope wherever you are, you are enjoying at least a little taste of Spring and if not, just break out a glass of white!

I'm starting yet another series... "Just Because". Sometimes, I am just in the mood to post a picture for a certain reason. Today, my reason is that I just needed a little reminder of Spring to brighten my day (since it is a bit dismal and dreary here in Chicago). I hope this adds some Spring to your day! Happy April!

I Owe You Project: Black and White Print for Fran and J.

This is only the second of quite a few "I owe you's" that I am getting to so far, but I am making some headway! This picture is for my brother J. and sister-in-law, Fran.... I promised them a picture (of their choice) as part of their wedding gift. (They got married a year and a half ago!) I am happy that they are ready for a picture.... they asked for a black and white and here's what we settled on.
This picture may be familiar to some as it was taken during the blizzard in January in Chicago and posted right here on my blog. What's interesting about this picture is that I did not convert to black and white, it is just naturally these colors (or without color).
I think it will look nice on their wall!

What a nice way to be greeted on this fine morning....

I couldn't help but sing (in my head) Blackbird by the Beatles (the Sarah MacLachlan version) as this blackbird perched himself right next to me, as I was waiting for the sun to rise. You can't tell here, but he was definitely singing a tune for the other birds around (and for me) to hear. :-)

Appreciating Sunrise

I don't know if everyone would agree, but I seriously get a little excited the minute the sun peeks out from the horizon. There is nothing like the colors (even in comparison to a sunset) and the warmth that automatically hits your face is so comforting.

I don't see sunrises very often... Seeing this one in Ft. Lauderdale the other day has prompted me to take more advantage of the sunrises that occur only a few blocks away from me over Lake Michigan. Consider this the first of more sunrise pictures that will be posted on my blog.

I hope that you are able to go out and appreciate a sunrise soon. It's worth the early wake up call.

I couldn't help being so literal with this one with the match of color on a ship that you'd likely see cadets.... At least one day I am sure they were on there!

It's fun being in another city and having a few swatches of colors to capture for this challenge. San Francisco was my canvas for brown (and it turns out cadet blue - see next post). I took a bunch of pictures, but this one was my favorite as it not only captures the color I needed, but the very essence of San Francisco: Fisherman's Wharf.

Some of you know that recently I went to Vegas for a photography conference. I didn't take many photos during my stay (very different from my trip out west for a photography workshop in Yellowstone this past summer where I took over 800 photos!), but I thought I'd share a few favorites (some with some new post processing techniques I learned at the conference). These were all taken at the very hyped, new casino: The Cosmopolitan. I actually loved the vibe and would consider staying there sometime in the future....

Really delayed, but I am getting back on track! I was on a mission in Vegas this past weekend... Black is more challenging than you would think, but this antique car fit the bill. I love how you can see the reflection of the slot machines and the many colors that make up a casino. I only wish I could replicate the sounds and the liveliness as well.

Chicago Blizzard - Two Days Later

The sun was shining and the skies were blue! There's still a lot of snow removal happening out there today... 20 inches is a lot of snow!

I took a sick day today.... By this afternoon, I was restless, knowing that it was probably just beautiful out there. I decided to take another trek out with my camera and get some fresh air. I was happy, both to get some fresh air (despite the cold - it actually made me feel better!) and to capture the following pictures. While snow is a one of the more difficult elements to be out in than other weather conditions, it sure does make a beautiful canvas, especially when the sky is so blue! (And you can actual see the lake today!) Enjoy!

Chicago Blizzard

What a storm! For the first time in my life, I experienced thunder snow... really wild! I had to go out and get some shots while the snow was fresh this morning... Here's just a few to give you a taste of what Chicago and Lake Michigan look like after the blizzard!

The snow drifts were taller than me... some probably close to 8 feet tall!

Crayola Challenge: BITTERSWEET.

Bittersweet is actually in the orange family... I had never heard of it until I started this challenge. What better place to get an array of oranges, than the sun! (Bittersweet is the darker orange small line of color below the actual sun - between the two blackish areas.) I took this last week, while enjoying a glass of wine with my brother and sister-in-law on the top of the John Hancock building. It was a beautiful scene all the way around... and hey I've now checked off my second of 52 colors in the challenge. Next one up... black.

OK folks! Here goes... first color of the challenge! I do have to say this was really challenging, mostly because it is quite dismal here in Chicago right now... so I decided to go to my archives for this one (don't worry, I won't get in the habit of doing this!). When looking through some of my older photos, I came across the one below and the color matched really nicely, so I had to use it! Bittersweet is coming today, so standby for that very shortly!

I had the pleasure of hosting my brother, Matt and sister-in-law, Tricia in Chicago last week. It happened to be the coldest day of the year, but we ventured out to anyway, seeking warmth along the way where we could!

While it was not fun to be as cold as we were, it was really nice to be some of the only people checking out the outdoor sites, including the Bean.

Every time I go to the Bean (with camera in tow) there are always so many people in my shots! I had always longed for a day where there were none. Well, I got my wish and below is the result of it. No people in the reflection of the Bean. Just the beautiful skyline and colors representing the crisp/cold day.

Canon Meets Crayola: Introducing 2011 Photo Challenge!

Canon meet Crayola. Crayola meet Canon...

The official 20ll Photo Challenge will be Crayola colors!

The details? My friend Cyrena and I picked 52 colors from the 64 color crayon box - one for each week of the year. (List is below.) We'll go in alphabetical order and capture a picture that most represents the color of the week. Pretty straight forward, right? I think so too... although, I do think some of the colors are going to be challenging. (But that's the point!) To brush up on your Crayola colors you can click here.

So, we're already behind as it is January, 17th, but we'll be playing same rules as ABC Challenge... Sometimes, there may be a lapse in entries, but the goal is to is to finish all 52 by December 31st, 2011. (We both completed last year, with time to spare!) So stay tuned here and on Cyrena's blog for our interpretation of the 52 colors below. Let the challenge begin! First up: AQUAMARINE!

25 Minute Sunset

It was a long day of 4 flights back and forth from Chicago to Tucson yesterday.... These days, flights are second nature to me, so I don't always appreciate what can be experienced in the air. On my third leg of my trip, a lady in the seat across from me in her 60's exclaimed that this was her first flight in her life! I thought, "WOW"... I've taken so many flights in my life and I am half her age! At that moment, I looked out the window to find this view... The lady across from me said - "so this is what you experience when you fly!" I thought - "not always!" I quickly snapped the view to be a reminder that there are so many beautiful moments in life - especially when you least expect them.... and to appreciate them as they happen (even if it's just another flight of the many).

I Owe You Project: Sailboats in Chicago

I tortured myself a bit last night as I weeded through my sailboat pictures from this past summer. Mostly because it's 20 degrees outside as I type this! On the flip side it made me appreciate every moment I was able to get on a sailboat in 2010... and gave me great excitement for the times in 2011! Thanks to Lynn and Ivan, I know I'll get my fill!

This picture particularly is for my friend, Jeff, who has patiently waited for the "I owe you" of a sailboat picture for several months. The print is coming! :-) For all of those, who are still patiently waiting, you should know that one of my resolutions is to get all of my "I owe you" gifts fulfilled in these winter months.... In fact, to hold myself accountable, here is my list of those "I owe you" prints. Every time I fulfill, I will share on my blog and we'll call it the "I Owe You Project": Katie, Buzz, Kip, Christine and Brian, Lynn and Ivan, Franny and J and Patty. I am sure there will be more given out in 2011, but this is good list to start!

I hope you enjoy this shot and it brings you the same appreciation and excitement for summer in 2011 that it did for me!
